what to look for in a tattoo?
Getting started with tattooing can be an intimidating task, but it doesn’t have to be! An ideal tattoo experience encompasses creativity, professionalism and comfort. Here are some aspects of getting a tattoo that you can expect.
find your artist and studio:
Look for artists whose work resonates with you, and who are specialists in the style of art you’re interested in. This can be via word-of-mouth, social media, browsing tattooing websites/magazines/podcasts, etc,. You may not know the exact tattoo that you want, and that’s fine! Look through their work, bla bla bla. Have a look at their studio, bla bla bla, vibes, bla bla bla.
Pre-Tattoo Consultation:
Once you’ve chosen your artist, you’ll attend a consultation. This is a meeting where you have a friendly, open discussion and where the artist listens to your ideas, preferences, and concerns. This meeting is important to set expectations surrounding your tattoo, and to establish a personal connection with the artist. During this meeting, the artist helps refine your concept, offering advice and ideas that align with your vision. It is also important to clearly communicate and discussing details like placement, size, style, and pricing, ensuring you both understand and agree on the process.
A Clean and Comfortable Environment:
The studio you attend should be a clean space in which you feel comfortable and one where proper equipment and sanitization processes are adhered to.
during the tattooing:
Your artist should display expertise, technique, and precision, working efficiently and respectfully while maintaining a high standard of artistry. Pain is to be expected, but your artist should have explained what to expect in terms of this, and can offer tips for managing discomfort. During the tattooing process, if it’s a fairly large piece/long session you’re having, there will usually be breaks.
tattoo After-care Instructions:
After your session, your artist will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your tattoo to ensure proper healing, and information on how to reach out if you have any questions or concerns post-tattoo. You can read our own after-care instructions here.
Overall experience:
Your tattoo experience should be one in which you feel valued and respected throughout the entire process, from the initial consultation to the final result.
